Day 12: Miyajima & Fukuoka
Before catching the ferry, a morning hike.

Mt. Misen
Even with two cable cars that take you most of the way to the top, it’s still a pretty solid hike to the top of Mt. Misen. The view is worth it though!

Lunch / Ferry / Train

Quick lunch of some grilled oysters, and then an oyster curry bread for the road.

Arriving in Fukuoka
Fukuoka is the largest city on Japan’s southern island Kyushu. It’s known for, among other things, the yatai street food vendors.

Yatai
The yatai stalls are basically like pop-up street bars, with 5-10 seats each. From what I read they are mostly a tourist thing now, although from what I saw it was mostly Japanese people sitting at them (could be Japanese tourists).

Yataiya Pyonkichi

One of the food specialties in Fukuoka is “mentaiko” which is spiced cod roe, that they do in all forms — grilled, soup, spaghetti sauce, etc. These are fried mentai dumplings.

Two stalls over from the first one I went to. Got a pork cartilage skewer and tacos, which he “learned to make from a real Mexican”. Other than the kind of sad flour tortilla, the tacos were good! I think the beef was marinated with yuzu and garlic, and I watched him make the salsa fresh to order.
Fukuoka had lots of people out in the streets and parks at night, and sometimes multiple buskers on the same corner paying over each other.
