Continuing the roadtrip into the province/principality/kingdom (depending on who you ask) of Asturias.

Early morning in Ribadeo

Woke up early so decided to drive out to the lighthouse.

Playa de Torimbia

Hiked down to a beach with a cave.

Playa de Silencio

Picked up some bread, meat and cheese and stopped by another cliffside beach. Didn’t hike down this time, just ate my lunch at the viewpoint bench.

Casa Gerardo

Did the “Clásico” menu at Casa Gerardo, which has been run by the same family since 1888 and has Michelin star for their traditional Asturian food.

5 snacks - cheese and sweet cracker (teepee), chorizo croquetas, smoked salmon brioche, stuffed onion, beef? broth
Cabbage in garlic cream with anchovies and picked peppers - so good!
Hake in cider sauce
Fabada, the classic dish of Asturias — beans with ham, chorizo, and blood sausage. José Andres says Casa Gerardo has the best fabada anywhere, so who am I to disagree.
Caramelized rice pudding, like a cross between rice pudding and crème brûlée.

Gijón

It was a rainy day in Gijó, but started to clear up around sunset.

Still full from Casa Gerardo, so not looking for dinner. The traditional drink in Asturias is cider, and it has to be poured from a height to aerate it. Drink the the whole glass in one go and then wait for the next round.

Long walk around the pier and up to the sculpture on the hill above the city.

Around 11pm was finally hungry again, but didn’t want to deal with a restauran, so grabbed a donër kebab and ate in the park.
